Industrial mist cooling and humidification

High-pressure mist systems create fine water droplets that evaporate in air, lowering air temperature and raising humidity. They are used to cool work areas and outdoor spaces and to maintain humidity in textile, cultivation and storage environments.

How mist cooling and humidification work

A high-pressure pump drives filtered water through stainless-steel or plastic tubing to nozzles with very small orifices. The water leaves as a fine mist with a large surface area, so it evaporates quickly. Changing water from liquid to vapour absorbs heat from the surrounding air, which lowers the dry-bulb temperature, and the vapour raises relative humidity. The lower limit of temperature is set by the wet-bulb temperature of the air, so the effect is strongest in dry conditions. Whether the aim is cooling or humidification, the principle is the same; what changes is the control target, the number and placement of nozzles and how the system is switched by temperature or humidity sensors.

Where it fits

Mist cooling is applied in hot production halls, workshops, warehouses, loading bays, outdoor seating and livestock housing, and for pre-cooling air at condenser inlets. Humidification is used in textile spinning and weaving, where low humidity can affect yarn behaviour and static, in greenhouses and mushroom cultivation, and in storage of goods affected by dry air. In spaces that are already humid or poorly ventilated, evaporation slows and wetting becomes a risk, so ventilation and control strategy are part of the design, not an afterthought.

Design elements

Typical elements include a pump set, pre-filtration and, where water quality requires it, softening or reverse-osmosis treatment, high-pressure lines and fittings, nozzles with anti-drip valves, zone valves and a controller linked to temperature and humidity sensors. Nozzle spacing and height are set from the space dimensions and airflow so that droplets evaporate before reaching surfaces. Drainage of lines, access for nozzle cleaning and integration with fans or ventilation also need to be planned.

When this approach fits

  • Hot working areas where conventional air-conditioning is impractical
  • Textile or cultivation areas that need humidity held within a range
  • Outdoor or semi-open areas that need local cooling
  • Livestock or poultry housing under heat stress
  • Condenser or equipment inlet air that would benefit from pre-cooling

Design constraints to confirm

  • What are the typical temperature and relative humidity at the site, and what is the target?
  • What are the space dimensions, and is it indoor, semi-open or outdoor?
  • How is the space ventilated, and how many air changes are there?
  • What is the water source and its quality, including hardness and dissolved solids?
  • Are there surfaces, products or equipment that must stay dry?
  • What power supply and control or BMS interface are available?

Frequently asked questions

Will a misting system make the floor or products wet?

A correctly designed system aims for droplets to evaporate before they reach surfaces. Wetting usually results from oversized droplets, nozzles placed too low or too close together, poor ventilation, high ambient humidity or dripping nozzles. These factors are considered when designing nozzle spacing, height and controls.

How much cooling can be expected?

The achievable cooling depends on the ambient temperature and humidity, airflow and ventilation in the space. It is limited by the wet-bulb temperature of the air. Site climate data is needed before any expected effect can be estimated for a particular location.

Is water treatment required?

It depends on the water. Hard water or water with high dissolved solids can scale nozzles and leave deposits. Filtration is normally fitted, and softening or reverse osmosis may be recommended after a water analysis.
