Stainless steel braided flexible hose assemblies

Overview

A stainless steel flexible hose has a thin-walled corrugated inner tube that provides flexibility and pressure containment, usually covered by one or more layers of stainless wire braid that carry the pressure load and limit elongation. Closed-pitch corrugations give greater flexibility; interlock hoses suit low-pressure duties such as exhaust. Corrugated hose is listed in AISI 321, 316L and 316, with 304 braid as standard and 321 or 316L braid on request, from 1/4 in to 12 in ID. End fittings include flanges, unions, BSP, BSPT, NPT and JIC threads, tri-clamp, camlock and quick-release couplings, attached by TIG welding or brazing. PMI testing is available.

Selecting a metal hose assembly

Pressure capacity falls as hose diameter increases and rises with additional braid layers, so confirm working pressure and temperature against the size required. Consider the bend radius and movement the hose must accommodate, the media for material choice, and the end connection at each end. Overall length is measured end to end including fittings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I specify a stainless steel hose assembly?

State the hose ID, overall length including fittings, the end connection at each end, the media, working pressure and temperature, and the braid configuration if known. Describe any movement the hose must take, such as vibration, offset or bending. You can request test records and material certificates with the assembly.

Why does a larger hose have a lower pressure rating?

For a given corrugation and braid construction, the pressure force on the hose wall grows with diameter, so the allowable working pressure falls as size increases. Adding braid layers raises the rating. This is why pressure and size need to be checked together when selecting a metal hose.
