Automated guided vehicles (AGV)

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that carry, tow or lift loads along predefined routes in factories and warehouses, guided by magnetic tape, laser, QR codes or vision and dispatched by fleet management software.

Overview

AGVs follow fixed routes defined by magnetic tape, laser reflectors, QR codes, vision, painted lines or embedded wire, and receive tasks from a fleet management system. Types include tow tractors that pull trains of carts, unit-load vehicles that carry pallets or containers on their deck, forklift AGVs that lift pallets, cart AGVs for lighter loads, heavy burden carriers, and hybrid vehicles that can also be driven manually.

Safety scanners, emergency stops and warning lights are standard features, with automatic charging as an option. AGVs can be integrated with ERP, WMS, MES, PLCs, conveyors, lifts and doors.

Selecting an AGV

Choose the vehicle type from the load, how it is transferred (towed, carried or lifted), lift height, route layout and distances, floor quality, and the number of moves per hour. Guidance method depends on how often routes change and on floor and lighting conditions. Charging, traffic with people and system integration complete the picture.

Frequently asked questions

Which guidance method should we use?

Magnetic tape and QR codes are simple and robust for fixed routes but need floor installation. Laser and natural-feature navigation avoid floor markers and make route changes easier. Vision guidance depends on consistent lighting and floor markings. The right choice depends on route stability, floor condition, traffic and how often the layout changes.

What do you need to quote an AGV system?

Send the load types with dimensions and weights, how loads are picked up and set down, lift heights, a layout with routes and stations, moves per hour, floor condition and any ramps, doors or lifts. Mention the WMS, ERP or MES in use and any existing conveyors the vehicles must interface with.

Ready to specify automated guided vehicles (agv)?

Send the details you have — quantities, sizes, drawings or a part number. Unknowns are fine.
