Level switches and sensors

Level switches signal when a liquid or bulk solid reaches a set point in a tank, silo or hopper, for alarms, pump control and overfill or run-dry protection. Level sensors provide continuous measurement over a range.

Overview

Different switching principles cover different media. Magnetic float switches use a float carrying a magnet that operates reed switches inside a non-ferrous stem, a simple choice for water level control. Side-mounted magnetic switches fit through the tank wall. Vibrating fork switches detect the change in fork vibration when covered, while rotating paddle switches stop turning when buried in bulk solids such as ore, fertiliser, grain, coal, sand and granules. A continuous level sensor with a stainless-steel housing and a 0 to 5 m measuring range is also offered.

Selecting the right level switch

Start with the medium: liquid, viscous liquid, powder or granular solid, with its density, temperature and tendency to build up. Then decide the mounting position (top or side), the switching point, the process pressure and the output needed by your control panel. For bulk solids, bulk density and particle size help decide between paddle and fork types.

Frequently asked questions

What information do you need to quote a level switch?

Send the medium and whether it is liquid or solid, its density or bulk density, temperature and pressure, the vessel type and mounting position, the switching point, any build-up or foaming, and the output and supply your panel needs. For bulk solids, add particle size and whether the material is abrasive, since these influence the switch type.

Which level switch suits powders and bulk solids?

Rotating paddle switches are a common choice for bulk solids such as grain, coal, sand, ore and fertiliser: the paddle stops when material covers it and the switch changes state. Vibrating fork switches are also used for powders and granules. Bulk density, particle size, abrasiveness and dust conditions should be shared so that the type can be confirmed.
