Digital water-level recorders
Digital water-level recorders are submersible pressure sensors with a built-in data logger that record water level on their own over long periods. They are used for groundwater, borehole and surface-water monitoring at remote measuring points.
Overview
A water-level recorder combines a hydrostatic pressure sensor, battery and memory in one sealed housing. Installed in a well, borehole or stilling pipe, it measures and stores level readings at a set interval, and the data is downloaded later for analysis. Two types are listed: a capacitive recorder with a gold-plated ceramic diaphragm and 316L housing in low ranges of 0 to 50, 100 or 300 mbar for fine resolution, and an 18 mm diameter recorder with integrated logger and RS485 interface covering 0.8 to 11 bar.
Selecting the right water-level recorder
Choose the range from the expected water-level variation; a low range gives finer resolution over small changes. Check the borehole or pipe diameter against the recorder diameter, the logging interval and how long the unit must run between visits, and how data will be retrieved. Also decide how barometric pressure will be compensated at the site.

Frequently asked questions
What information do you need to quote a water-level recorder?
Send the expected range of water-level change, the well or borehole diameter and depth to the water, the logging interval and the period between site visits, how you plan to download data, and whether readings should be live over a digital interface as well. Mention the number of monitoring points so the quotation covers all recorders and accessories.
What is the difference between a level recorder and a level transmitter?
A level transmitter sends a live signal to a PLC, logger or telemetry unit and depends on that equipment for power and storage. A level recorder carries its own battery and memory, so it can be left in a well or borehole to collect readings until the data is downloaded. Some recorders also offer a digital interface for live readings.
