Ultrafiltration water-treatment systems

Ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membrane systems that remove suspended solids, colloids, bacteria and, in the case of NF, part of the dissolved hardness, for RO pre-treatment, process water and water reuse.

Overview

Ultrafiltration uses hollow-fibre or flat-sheet membranes with pores in the 0.01–0.1 micron range to separate particles, colloids and microorganisms while letting dissolved minerals pass. Nanofiltration membranes are tighter and also reject a share of divalent salts. Both run as pressure-driven, modular systems with backwash and clean-in-place routines and can be fitted with flux and differential-pressure monitoring and membrane integrity testing.

Membranes are made from polymers such as PVDF, PES or PAN. Modules can be supplied in custom sizes for plant builders as well as within complete skids.

Selecting UF or NF

UF is chosen when the aim is solids and microbial removal without changing mineral content, for example ahead of RO or for reuse. NF suits partial softening or colour removal at lower pressure than RO. Selection depends on feed turbidity, organics and temperature, the required product quality, membrane chemistry compatibility with cleaning chemicals, and the backwash and CIP arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Why use UF ahead of an RO plant?

UF removes suspended solids, colloids and microorganisms that would otherwise foul RO membranes, giving the RO a more consistent feed. This is particularly useful where feed water quality varies, such as surface water or treated effluent being recycled. The benefit for a given site depends on the feed and should be assessed from a water analysis.

What do you need to specify a UF or NF system?

Send the feed source and analysis (turbidity, SDI if available, TOC or COD, hardness, temperature), the required product flow and quality, and the downstream use. Mention the cleaning chemicals you plan to use, any space limits, and whether you need complete skids or replacement membrane modules only.

Ready to specify ultrafiltration water-treatment systems?

Send the details you have — quantities, sizes, drawings or a part number. Unknowns are fine.
