Robot navigation and route mapping
Navigation setup and route mapping for mobile robots, covering site mapping, route and zone definition, traffic rules, interactions with people, doors and lifts, and testing before routes go live.

Overview
Mobile robots rely on an accurate map and well-defined routes. Navigation work maps the site, defines routes, waiting positions and transfer points, and sets zones where robots must slow down, stop or are not permitted. Interactions with people, other vehicles, doors, crossings and blind corners are mapped and controlled through speed and route rules, layout changes, access control, training and protective sensing.
Guidance can use LiDAR, laser, SLAM, QR codes, magnetic tape or vision depending on the vehicle and site, and in hospitals routing can be limited to approved zones.
Planning navigation and routes
Consider route widths and visibility, floor condition and markings, lighting, changes in layout over time, restricted areas, and where people cross robot paths. Each route rule should be tested, including faults and restarts, before go-live, and maps should be updated whenever the layout changes.

Frequently asked questions
What is needed to map routes on our site?
Provide an up-to-date layout drawing, the start and end points of each flow, details of doors, lifts, ramps and crossings, areas where robots must not go, and shift patterns. Site access is needed for mapping runs, ideally at times when the area is representative of normal operation.
What happens when the layout changes?
The map and routes need updating whenever racks, machines or walkways move. Small changes can usually be handled by editing the map and re-testing affected routes. Larger changes may need a fresh mapping run and updated safety review. Planning layout changes with the robot team avoids disruption.
