Metal forming and bending
CNC bending forms sheet metal into channels, angles, boxes, brackets and enclosures on a press brake, giving consistent bend angles across a batch. Mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium are bent to drawing, as finished parts or as job work.
Overview
On a CNC press brake, a punch presses the sheet into a die along a straight line, and a programmable back-gauge positions the part for each bend in sequence. This keeps angles and flange lengths consistent from part to part and allows multi-bend profiles. Bending usually follows laser cutting, using a flat pattern that allows for the material's bend allowance, and is often followed by welding and powder coating. Typical bent parts include enclosures, panels, brackets, channels and covers for engineering, automotive and electrical equipment.
Selecting the right bending approach
Bendability depends on material, grade, thickness and grain direction, and on the inside bend radius and flange lengths in the design. Give the material and thickness, bend angles and tolerances, and the length of the longest bend. Very short flanges, bends close to holes or very large parts may need design changes, so drawings should be reviewed before release.

Frequently asked questions
What do you need to quote CNC bending?
Send drawings showing bend angles, inside radii and flange lengths, the material grade and thickness, the length of the longest bend, quantities and tolerances. Say whether you will supply cut blanks or need the parts cut as well, and whether welding or powder coating follows, so the full sequence can be planned and priced together.
Why does the flat pattern matter in bending?
When sheet is bent, the material stretches on the outside of the bend and compresses on the inside, so the flat blank must be slightly shorter than the sum of the outside dimensions. If the flat pattern uses the correct bend allowance for the material, thickness and tooling, the finished part meets its dimensions. You can send a flat pattern or a 3D model.
