Temperature sensors and transmitters
Temperature sensors such as thermocouples convert process temperature into an electrical signal, and temperature transmitters turn that signal into a standard output for control systems. Thermocouples suit high-temperature and high-vibration duties.
Overview
A thermocouple is made from two dissimilar metal conductors joined at the measuring point. It produces a small voltage that depends directly on temperature, which makes it suitable for high-temperature measurement. Designs built from mineral-insulated sheathed cable withstand very high vibration loads. Actual performance depends on the instrument model, the sensing element and the materials in contact with the process. A temperature transmitter, mounted in the sensor head or on a rail, converts the sensor signal into a robust standard output for a PLC or indicator.
Selecting the right temperature sensor
Specify the temperature range and medium, the insertion length and diameter, the sheath or thermowell material, the process connection and the head or cable termination. Choose the thermocouple type, or a resistance thermometer, to suit range and accuracy, and decide whether a transmitter is needed and which output it should provide.

Frequently asked questions
What information do you need to quote a temperature sensor?
Send the temperature range, the medium, the insertion length and sheath diameter, the thermowell or sheath material, the process connection, the head or cable type and length, and whether a transmitter and which output are needed. Mention the thermocouple type if your system already expects one, and any vibration or hazardous-area conditions.
Should I use a thermocouple or a resistance thermometer?
Thermocouples cover higher temperatures and are robust and quick to respond, which suits furnaces, exhausts and high-vibration locations. Resistance thermometers such as Pt100 give better accuracy and stability at moderate temperatures and are common in process and HVAC measurement. The temperature range, required accuracy and installation conditions usually decide between them.
