Water treatment

Sediment filters and micron cartridges

Sediment filters and micron-rated cartridges that strip sand, silt, clay and rust particles from borewell and process water, mainly as pre-filtration to protect RO membranes, UV units and downstream equipment.

Overview

Sediment filtration is the first line of protection in most water treatment trains. Micron-rated cartridges, typically spun or pleated polypropylene, catch fine particles in a housing and are replaced when the pressure drop rises. For heavier sediment loads, backwashable sand media filters take the bulk of the solids before cartridges polish the water. Sediment filters remove suspended particles only. They do not reduce dissolved salts (TDS) or hardness, which need RO or softening.

Choosing a sediment filter

The right micron rating depends on what the downstream equipment can tolerate and how dirty the feed is. Coarser cartridges ahead of finer ones can extend change intervals. Consider flow rate, housing length and diameter, and whether a sand filter upstream would reduce cartridge consumption on borewell water with heavy silt.

Frequently asked questions

Will a sediment filter reduce TDS or hardness?

No. Sediment filters remove suspended particles such as sand, silt and rust. Dissolved salts and hardness pass straight through. If your water analysis shows high TDS or hardness, an RO plant or softener is needed after sediment pre-filtration, and the sediment stage then helps protect that equipment.

Which micron rating should I use?

It depends on the feed water and the equipment downstream. Many RO plants use a 5 micron cartridge as final pre-filtration, while a 20 micron element upstream can take the coarser load. Share your water source, the flow and what the filter is protecting, and we can suggest a staged arrangement.
