Water treatment

Sand and multimedia filtration systems

Pressure sand and multimedia filters that remove suspended solids, silt and turbidity from raw water, used as RO and softener pre-treatment and to protect cooling-tower loops, heat exchangers and process lines.

Overview

A pressure sand filter is a closed vessel holding graded silica sand on a gravel support bed. Water flows downward through the media, which traps suspended matter, and the bed is periodically backwashed to lift and flush the collected solids. Multimedia versions layer media of different sizes and densities, and a carbon layer can be added for dual-media duty. Vessels are carbon steel with an epoxy lining, FRP, or with stainless-steel or food-grade PVC internals.

Units can be vertical or horizontal, single or arranged as duplex or parallel skids, with automatic backwash triggered by differential pressure or run time.

Selecting the right sand filter

Consider feed turbidity and suspended solids, required outlet quality, flow rate and operating pressure. These set the vessel diameter, media depth and grading. Shell material depends on water chemistry and whether the application is food or pharmaceutical. Also decide between manual, semi-automatic and automatic backwash, and confirm backwash water availability and disposal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between a sand filter and a multimedia filter?

A single-media sand filter suits moderate turbidity and general pre-filtration. A multimedia filter uses layers of different media so that coarser particles are held near the top and finer ones deeper in the bed, which can extend run time between backwashes on dirtier water. The choice depends on feed solids, required outlet quality and backwash water availability.

What information is needed to size a pressure sand filter?

Send the design flow, operating pressure, a feed water analysis with turbidity and suspended solids, the downstream equipment being protected, and the preferred shell material. Mention whether you need manual or automatic backwash, any space limits, and the connection type expected at site so that nozzles can be specified correctly.
