Vortex flow meters
Vortex flow meters measure the volumetric flow of liquids, gases and steam by counting the vortices shed from a bluff body placed in the flow. With no moving parts, they are often used on steam, compressed air and utility lines.
Overview
When fluid passes a bluff body, or shedder bar, in the pipe, vortices form alternately on each side and break away downstream. The frequency of this shedding is proportional to flow velocity over a wide range, and a sensor behind the shedder picks up the resulting pressure pulses. With pressure and temperature compensation, the volumetric reading can be converted to mass or energy flow, which is why vortex meters are common on steam and gas utility lines. Very low flows, below the point where shedding becomes regular, cannot be measured.
Selecting the right vortex flow meter
Confirm the fluid and its state (liquid, gas, or saturated or superheated steam), the minimum and maximum flow, pressure and temperature, and the line size. The minimum measurable velocity often decides the meter size, which can be smaller than the pipe. Check the available straight run, vibration at the mounting point, required outputs and whether pressure or temperature compensation is needed.

Frequently asked questions
What information do you need to quote a vortex flow meter?
Send the fluid and its state, the minimum, normal and maximum flow, operating pressure and temperature, pipe size and schedule, end connection, required outputs and power supply, and whether mass or energy flow must be calculated. Mention the available straight pipe lengths and any hazardous-area requirement, so that the meter size and arrangement can be checked properly.
Can a vortex flow meter be used for steam?
Yes, steam is one of the typical duties for vortex meters, because they have no moving parts in the flow. For mass or energy measurement the reading is usually compensated with pressure and temperature, either inside the meter or in a separate flow computer. Send the steam condition, pressure, temperature and flow range so that a suitable size can be selected.
