Mass flow controllers
Mass flow controllers measure and regulate the mass flow of gases, combining a flow sensor, control valve and electronics in one unit. They deliver a set flow rate on command for dosing, blending, analysers and laboratory or test systems.
Overview
A mass flow controller (MFC) holds gas flow at a set point regardless of upstream pressure changes. Many designs use a thermal sensor: a small portion of the gas passes through a heated capillary, and the temperature difference it causes is proportional to mass flow. The electronics compare this with the set point and drive an integral proportional valve to correct any difference. A mass flow meter is the same device without the valve. Because the instrument is calibrated for a particular gas, the gas type must be known when ordering.
Selecting the right mass flow controller
Define the gas or gas mixture, the full-scale flow and the lowest flow you need to control, the inlet and outlet pressures, and the gas temperature. Then choose the seal and wetted materials for compatibility, the process connection, the analogue or digital interface used by your controller, the supply voltage, and any response-time or leak-tightness requirement.

Frequently asked questions
What information do you need to quote a mass flow controller?
Send the gas or mixture composition, the full-scale and minimum flow with units, inlet and outlet pressure, gas temperature, required connection size and type, the control and readback signals your system uses, supply voltage, and any cleanliness or material restrictions. If the unit replaces an existing controller, its model details and wiring help us match the interface.
Can one mass flow controller be used for different gases?
A thermal mass flow controller is calibrated for a specific gas, because the reading depends on the gas's heat capacity. Some instruments store several gas calibrations or apply conversion factors, but accuracy is highest with the gas used for calibration. List all gases you intend to use so that the calibration and materials can be confirmed.
