Pneumatic cylinders

Pneumatic cylinders convert compressed-air pressure into linear motion for pushing, pulling, clamping and positioning in automated machines. The range covers compact single-acting micro cylinders and standard ISO profile cylinders.

Product familyPneumatic and process controls

Overview

A pneumatic cylinder consists of a barrel, piston, rod and end covers; compressed air applied to one side of the piston drives the rod out or in. Single-acting cylinders use air for one stroke and a spring for the return, while double-acting cylinders are powered in both directions. Dimensional standards fix mounting and key dimensions, so cylinders fit standard mountings and accessories. Micro cylinders to ISO 6432 have compact round bodies with threaded end covers, and profile cylinders to ISO 15552 (VDMA 24562) are used widely on automation equipment.

Selecting the right pneumatic cylinder

Work out the force needed from the load and the available air pressure, which gives the bore, then the stroke length. Decide single or double acting, the mounting style, rod end, cushioning and whether magnetic piston sensing is required. Operating pressure, ambient temperature and the air quality at the cylinder should also be confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

What information do you need to quote a pneumatic cylinder?

Send the bore and stroke, or the load and force needed with the available air pressure, single or double acting, the mounting style, rod end thread and any rod accessories, cushioning, and whether position sensing is needed. If you are replacing an existing cylinder, its standard (such as ISO 6432 or ISO 15552) and nameplate details help us match it.

What does ISO 15552 mean for a cylinder?

ISO 15552, which corresponds to the earlier VDMA 24562, defines mounting dimensions and key interfaces for standard pneumatic cylinders in common bore sizes. A cylinder built to it fits standard mountings and accessories, which makes replacement and machine design simpler. The bore, stroke and options still need to be specified, since the standard does not fix everything.
