Air-line filters and regulators

Compressed-air line filters remove water, oil, dirt and odour from compressed air to protect valves, cylinders, instruments and other equipment downstream of the compressor. Pre-filters, fine filters, carbon filters and moisture separators are used in stages.

Overview

Air leaving a compressor carries water vapour, oil aerosol and particles that condense and collect in the pipework. Line filters are installed in stages to clean it. A moisture separator or pre-filter takes out bulk water and coarse dirt, a fine filter or microfilter removes fine particles and oil aerosol, and an activated carbon filter removes oil vapour and odour where clean air is needed. After-filters downstream of dryers catch any dust carried over. Filters can be supplied in stainless-steel housings or customised to suit the application.

Selecting the right air-line filter

Define the air flow rate and working pressure, the pipe or port size, and the air quality required at the point of use. Then choose the filter stages in order, typically separator or pre-filter, fine filter and, if needed, carbon filter, with drains suited to the condensate load. Housing material and access for element replacement also matter.

Frequently asked questions

What information do you need to quote compressed-air filters?

Send the air flow rate, working pressure and temperature, the pipe or port size, the type of compressor (oil-lubricated or oil-free), and the air quality needed at the point of use, for example for instruments, painting or general tools. Say whether you need a single filter or a complete set of stages, and the drain type you prefer.

Why are compressed-air filters fitted in stages?

Each filter grade is designed for a particular contaminant. Putting a coarse separator or pre-filter first removes bulk water and large particles, so the finer filters downstream are not overloaded and their elements last longer. A carbon stage, where used, comes last, because liquid oil or water would quickly saturate the carbon and stop it removing vapour.
